About this work
Russel Wright was an American industrial designer who, from the late 1920s to the 1960s, created a number of commercially successful tableware ranges that helped to introduce modern design to the public. In 1927 he established a workshop at his New York residence, where he designed and manufactured his first commercial range of spun aluminium table wares for the domestic market, called the Informal Serving Accessories series. Desiring to reach a broad audience, Wright chose aluminium for its visual association with pewter but at a lower cost. The brushed metal, combined with the circular forms of the pieces gave them a sense of modernity with their machine-age aesthetic.
