About this work
Picasso only engaged on a few occasions with still-life subjects and all were produced during the early years of the 1950s. This dish was conceived on 29 March 1955 and was the only still-life subject that Picasso produced during this year. The fresh, bold design is complemented by the strong, gestural strokes of the flowers, in combination with incised details that give a three-dimensional quality to the design.
