About this work

Roger Broders specialised in poster design, creating almost one hundred posters between 1922 and 1935. Many of these were commissioned by the French railway company PLM (Paris-Lyon-Mediterranée) and advertised tourist destinations serviced by it, in particular the French Alps and the French Riviera. The 1920s–30s period saw an increase in luxury and tourist travel, and the related blossoming of advertising posters and the graphic design profession. With their simplified forms, bold colours and plain typefaces, Broders’ posters exemplify Art Deco design. This poster advertises the port of Marseille, which provided an important commercial link between France and North Africa.
