About this work
Kenzo Takada was the first Japanese designer to be embraced by the French fashion industry. He studied at the Bunka Fashion College, Tokyo, before travelling to Paris in 1964. In 1970, Takada opened the boutique Jungle Jap, and in 1976, he opened his Kenzo flagship store. Kenzo designs featured an exuberant colour palette, printed and knitted textiles inspired by global cultures. Combining a variety of textiles, this work encapsulates Takada’s multifaceted approach to design and the influence of Persian textile practice. In 1993, Takada sold Kenzo to luxury goods company LVMH, and, in 1999, he retired from his fashion empire to pursue a career in art, before passing away in 2020.
