Pierpaolo Piccioli studied fashion at the European Institute of Design in Rome, and in 1990 became the accessories designer at Fendi. Between 1999 and 2006 he worked in partnership with Maria Grazia Chiuri at Valentino, where together they revitalised the label’s accessory, eyewear and, later, menswear collections. Co-creative directors at Valentino from 2003 to 2016, Chiuri and Piccioli transformed the couture line for contemporary audiences. From 2016 to 2024 Piccioli was the sole creative director at Valentino. For his autumn–winter 2017 collection, Piccioli said ‘he’d merged Victoriana and the Memphis Group as starting points’.
