About this work
Yves Saint Laurent’s first collection was a range of simplified triangular silhouettes reimagining Christian Dior’s A-line and later dubbed by the designer as the Trapeze line. The collection was hailed as a triumph, with French daily newspaper Le Figaro declaring ‘Saint Laurent has saved France’ and the house from financial ruin. Look 150, Rose rouge is an important example from this key collection, notable for its vibrant hue, luxurious silk faille and exacting hand-sewn details. This example is from the wardrobe of style icon the Countess Jacqueline de Ribes, who was a close friend of Saint Laurent and regular couture client.
