About this work

Real Time is composed of paired photographs taken seconds apart, separated by a black-line border. This presentation allows the viewer to consider the relationship between the images, and the small changes and passing of time between them. Eve Sonneman first showed the photographs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York before publishing them as a book. In 1976 she saw an advertisement in Artforum from newly established press Printed Matter, which was seeking artists’ books to publish. ‘So I sent [my photographs] in and that work became my first published book, Real Time,’ Sonneman recalled. ‘I was as thrilled as could be!’
