About this work

Jeweller, sculptor and teacher Villiama Grakalic is remembered as one of Melbourne’s great forces in contemporary jewellery and object design. Migrating to Australia from Yugoslavia in the 1960s, she trained in gold and silversmithing in Melbourne in the 1980s. Her interest in the physical and metaphorical qualities of materials led to the production of jewellery featuring a repertoire of personally significant symbols and motifs, as seen in this brooch made from gold and steel.
