About this work
Nancy Lee Katz worked as a film editor and still photographer. From the late 1970s to the late 2000s, she privately photographed artists, playwrights, architects, composers and musicians, creating an archive of nearly 200 portraits. These images were rarely exhibited during her lifetime. Katz approached each subject individually, based on admiration and the strength of her work. As curator Malcolm Daniel noted, Katz was intensely private and unknown to most of her subjects before proposing a portrait.
