About this work
Daisy Makeig-Jones was one of the most prominent British ceramic designers of the early twentieth century. Her unique ‘fairyland lustreware’ pieces, as they were known, were richly decorated with scenes inspired by Celtic folklore and embellished with intricate gilding and lustre glazes. Dramatically different from anything that Wedgwood had produced to date, Makeig-Jones’s innovative and visually opulent designs were aimed at the luxury end of the market and were particularly popular with collectors. Nevertheless, during the1930s their popularity waned as their rich ornamentation was considered outdated and at odds with more pared back, modernist trends in design.
