About this work
Katheryn Leopoldseder creates both intimate and large-scale art objects, using the language of jewellery to contemplate our relationship to the body in time and place. This brooch by Leopoldseder reflects on cycles of renewal and resilience. Cast in bronze from an almond tree in the Abbotsford Convent heritage gardens, the work features hand-carved wax almonds cast in silver and blossoms formed from sheet metal. The design references the biblical story of Aaron’s staff, which miraculously bloomed with flowers, and symbolises enduring faith and transformation. For Leopoldseder, the branch embodies Abbotsford Convent’s artistic community – once under threat, now a flourishing artistic ecosystem.
