About this work
William Mackinnon is based between the Spanish island of Ibiza and his hometown of Naarm/Melbourne. He refers to his paintings as ‘psychological landscapes’, interweaving personal and cultural histories, and real and imaginary elements. Home and away features the recurring motifs of trees and roads, in a semi-urban scene constructed from memory. From the rolling hill-scape and evening sky to the lights of the city, conflicting emotional states percolate through the canvas, evoking feelings of both anxiety and calm.
