About this work

One of the leading French portrait painters during the reign of King Louis XV, François-Herbert Drouais captured likenesses of numerous nobles and members of the French royal family, as well as wealthy Parisians. This elegant portrait, which is signed and dated 1772, depicts a dignified lady at court. The treatment of the lace that the sitter is wearing is a painterly tour de force that enlivens the whole
composition to spectacular effect.
