About this work
Since her 1981 Paris debut, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons has been known for her influential and visionary designs. This work is from a key collection conceived as a prelude to the designer’s costume commission for a production of Orlando by the Vienna State Opera in 2019. The collection was a continuation of Kawakubo’s exploration of gender codes and transgression, seen here expressed via a fusion of historical tailoring, punk, ‘feminine’ decoration, and woven imagery.
