Alessandro Michele was the senior accessories designer at Fendi in the 1990s. In 2002 he began working for Gucci’s London-based design department, and in January 2015 was appointed creative director of the house. Within the year, he released the Dionysus bag, marked by a large horseshoe clasp – an homage to Gucci’s equine roots. Each end terminates in a tiger head, representing Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, pleasure and excess, who is often depicted riding a tiger. The Dionysus bag encapsulates Michele’s kaleidoscopic exploration of Gucci’s house codes, anchored by historical and cultural references.
