About this work

In 1758 Sèvres introduced the pink ground colour fond rose. The colour became highly fashionable and was a particular favourite of Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress. In the 1760s the English termed the colour ‘Rose Pompadour’ but this was more a crimson or claret colour than the Sèvres pink ground colour. Regardless, the colour has forever after become known as ‘Pompadour Pink’.
