About this work
Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring–summer 1988 collection took inspiration from the 1987 film La Concierge est dans l’Escalier (The Concierge is on the Staircase), referencing pre-war French cinema and the futuristic universe of director Marc Caro. The collection also fused 1980s power dressing with traditional men’s suiting fabrics. During the runway presentation, Gaultier’s own concierge was positioned next to the runway in front of a television set before chasing models off the runway with a broom at the end of the show.
