About this work

Singlet, loincloth, and hat typifies Gaultier’s continual reworking of the classic Breton stripe in endless widths, materials and embellishments. Gaultier has identified with the figure of the sailor since childhood, from a fascination with Popeye to the archetype of the sailor as rebellious outsider. In this work, Gaultier playfully questions gender and eroticism, drawing on the masculine sailor archetype as the hyper-sexualised gay symbol.
