About this work
Jean Paul Gaultier’s 1994 spring–summer collection featured a cacophony of design references, including eighteenthcentury silhouettes in denim, corsetry, Joan of Arc–style armour, punkish graffiti prints, and a tattoo-currency motif (echoing one that Martin Margiela, a former protégé of Gaultier, showed in 1989). Incorporating Indian and African references, the work reflects Gaultier’s interest in global cultures and the type of postmodern sampling and referencing that characterised fashion in the 1990s.
