About this work

The Modern Man collection typifies Gaultier’s interrogation of gendered binaries. In 1985 he began tackling notions of masculinity and femininity, referring to historic male figures such as dandies and military men, and reappropriating the male corset of the nineteenth century. This collection is a continuation of his exploration of sexual conventions and power.
