About this work

The rim of this wine glass is engraved with a fruiting vine, and the bowl with a multi-petalled rose and empty bud. The most common Jacobite symbol was the six-petalled white heraldic rose, representing the exiled king. However, the varying number of rose petals found across different glasses does not appear to have any particular significance. What is particularly rare on this glass is the so-called ‘empty bud’, the exact meaning of which is unknown. Glasses with buds to the right of the rose generally represent the heir apparent, Prince Charles Edward Stuart. Only around ten examples of glasses with the empty bud motif are believed to exist.
