About this work

This study is modelled on Thea Proctor’s own sleeping cat. Probably the only time cats sit still long enough to be drawn in any detail is when they are asleep – moments countless artists have used to their advantage. No doubt this cat belonged to Proctor, as she named it Calico and numerous sketches by her of this beautiful cat exist. There is another drawing of Calico on the back of this sheet, which was probably removed from a sketchbook.
