About this work
This work is part of Rineke Dijkstra’s beach series from the early 1990s portraying adolescents in full-length, frontal poses against neutral seaside backdrops. The work exemplifies her methodical approach: large-scale prints, minimal context and precise detail that emphasise physical presence over narrative. At the time, the series was widely recognised for redefining photographic portraiture by combining conceptual clarity with observation. Reflecting on her interest in youth, Dijkstra notes: ‘With young people everything is much more on the surface – all the emotions. When you get older you know how to hide things.’
