The Japanese-French painter Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita is considered one of the greatest artist cat lovers of the twentieth century. Cats are the main subject or accompany human subjects in many of Foujita’s works. In 1910 Foujita graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Three years later he took up residence in Montparnasse, Paris and became acquainted with avant-garde artists Amadeo Modigliani, Chaim Soutine, Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. This work was produced in collaboration with Japanese woodblock-print artisans.
