About this work

During the Edo period (1603–1868) and into the early twentieth century, a variety of finely crafted footwear styles were popular in Japan. These black lacquer wedding sandals, konrei yo pokkuri geta, have wood bases and silk brocade straps featuring designs of pine trees and red-crowned cranes, symbols of longevity, good fortune and resilience.
