About this work

During the Edo period (1603–1868) and into the early twentieth century, a variety of finely crafted footwear styles were popular in Japan. The bases of these red-lacquer wedding sandals, konrei yo pokkuri geta, are hollow, with each sandal containing a small bell that rings as the bride walks. The design on the lacquer base features pine trees and red-crowned cranes, symbols of longevity, good fortune and resilience.
