About this work
Martin Margiela’s spring–summer 1990 collection presentation catapulted the designer to international acclaim. He subverted the traditional fashion show, rejecting the exclusivity of the industry by involving a group of primary school pupils from a suburb on the outskirts of Paris. They helped select a location and collaborated on more than 500 handmade invitations. While fashion insiders attended the parade, seats were reserved for local children or allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
