About this work

Martin Margiela was born in Louvain, Belgium in 1957. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp in 1979 and began working as a freelance fashion stylist the following year. In 1982 Margiela moved to Paris to join Jean Paul Gaultier as a design assistant, remaining there until 1987, when he left to found his own company, Maison Martin Margiela, with Jenny Meirens. The house presented its first women's ready-to-wear collection in Paris in 1988. This same year, Margiela established his artisanal collection to reconstruct new garments from existing clothing and accessories – used or new – giving abandoned pieces new life. These pieces exemplify Maison Martin Margiela’s legacy of deconstruction, referencing fashion history and documenting the passage of time.
