About this work
Although primarily known as a printmaker, Martin King also works in drawing, painting, installation and animation. He has recently created large-scale multimedia works exploring landscapes and the protection of fragile ecosystems threatened by climate change. In Strangerlands II, a large open book is set against the backdrop of an old-growth myrtle beech and sassafras forest. Below the open book, King has incorporated imagery drawn from William Strutt’s iconic painting Black Thursday Feb 6th 1851, while the images in the book reference depictions of apocalypse and war, including Francisco Goya’s etchings The disasters of war and Ingmar Bergman’s film The seventh seal.
