About this work

This jumpsuit is from Jean Paul Gaultier’s 1995 Cyber collection, later dubbed ‘Mad Max’ for its dystopian pre-Y2K themes. An evolution of his tattoo body-stocking suits and sportwear-inspired, body-conscious looks, it features the dot matrix ‘cyber’ print – inspired by Victor Vasserely – an attached hood and contrasting blue droid print at the centre back. Born in 1952, Gaultier began his career in 1970 working with Pierre Cardin and established his own fashion house in 1976, staging his first show the same year. Critical and commercial success followed quickly and by the early 1980s he was one of the most talked-about young designers. Among his most recognisable designs are the Breton striped top and the iconic cone bra, a recurring motif throughout his work.
