About this work
Stephen Jones, born on the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire, studied fashion design and millinery at Saint Martin's School of Art, London. In 1979 Jones left school, becoming a regular attendee of London's new wave Blitz nightclub in Covent Garden. In 1980, Blitz's owner Steve Strange provided financial backing for Jones's first millinery salon. In 1982, Jones presented his first collection and began showing in Paris in 1982, later designing for Paul Gaultier, Comme des Garcons, John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Walter Van Beirendonck. In 2009, the Victoria and Albert Museum celebrated his work in Hats: An Anthology, and in 2010 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). For this Comme des Garcons Homme Plus collection, Jones crafted black caps sprouting Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny ears. Typical of Kawakubo’s avant-garde approach to dress, and Jones’ witty and often surreal aesthetic, for this collection Jones ’crafted black caps sprouting Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny ears. This hat captures the uncanny and visually disruptive designs that Comme des Garçons is known for.
