About this work
Mandy Nicholson is a Wurundjeri, Dja Dja Wurrung and Ngurai Illum Wurrung artist and Traditional Owner who was born on Country in Healesville, Victoria.This possum skin cloak is adorned in traditional designs specific to Nicholson's Country in south-east Victoria that celebrate family, community and the continuation of language and culture. As a Traditional Owner of Wurundjeri land, Nicholson has a close kinship with customary practices, such as the making of possum skin cloaks, which are a sacred and significant in Victoria. Possum skin cloaks have spiritual, ceremonial and cultural significance, they are manifestations of their creator and wearer, signalling relationships to kin, Country and ancestry, and knowledge gathered over time.
