About this work
For her 2024 Anger collection, Kawakubo drew on the symbolism of black to express her feelings of frustration at the world and with herself. In the 1980s, when runways were dominated by colourful, body-conscious clothes, Kawakubo used distressed fabrics, asymmetry and black to challenge Western aesthetic values. Here, in combination with motif of graffiti, barbed wire and chains, exposed zips and vinyl leathers, black represents a state of punk-fuelled disaffection.
