About this work

Born in Paris to a Lithuanian father and a Romanian mother, Mirka Mora was a prolific artist who worked across sculpture, tapestry, paintings and murals. She ran a gallery, made clothes and, with her husband, opened some of Melbourne’s first European-style eateries. This soft sculpture is representative of Mora’s lifelong interest in dolls. Stuffed with used textiles and painted in her distinctive decorative style, the doll incorporates a combination of the mythical, surreal and folkloric themes seen in her wider practice.
