About this work
Jenny Watson is a leading Australian artist, whose painting practice spans five decades. Born in Melbourne, she studied painting at the National Gallery School, graduated in 1972, and in 1993 became the first female artist to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale with a solo exhibition. From the late 1970s, Watson’s work was influenced by punk and feminism, and she created expressionistic paintings combining autobiographical stories and fictional narratives. In these new works, Watson paints vignettes drawn from everyday life in her characteristically naïve style.
