About this work

Issey Miyake and his design team began experimenting with pleated polyester cut and sewn garments in 1988, creating designs that are now considered pioneering and revolutionary. One of Miyake’s most recognisable pleated designs is this ‘starfish’ dress, which mimics the fluidity of water and marine life. In the 1990s Miyake also explored collapsible designs; in this case, the dress folds into a parcel formed by its triangular pattern pieces.
