About this work
Christopher Pease utilises a visual language that is symbolically rich and informed by Western histories of figurative oil painting and traditional Minang Nyoongar storytelling. In this painting Pease depicts a fox hunt, mimicking the style of British painter John Frederick Herring Senior. The colonial imagery overlays representational depictions of two Nyoongar peoples, visible in the foreground. By superimposing depictions of Western over scenes of customary Minang Nyoongar ways of living, Pease weaves notions of home and Western land ownership while also highlighting the consequent loss of Minang Nyoongar culture through his visual vocabulary.
