About this work

Iluwanti Ken is a senior Pitjantjatjara artist working across painting, weaving and sculpture. Ken is known for her expressive depictions of mother eagles hunting, conveying her Tjukurpa (Anangu ancestral knowledge, encompassing past, present and future). Ken has explained that birds like the walawuru (eagles) and patupiri (swallows) have lessons for Anangu women about how to care for one’s children. These birds build strong wiltjas (shelters) for their family, they hunt for food and protect their young. She has noted that the Walawuru Tjukurpa – the story of the eagles – is connected to her father’s Country: ‘This is my Tjukurpa and all my children’s Tjukurpa too.’
