About this work

Antonia Sellbach’s Unstable Object series consists of forty-six large-scale paintings that explore the possibilities of one repeated form: a painted ‘beam mark’. By repeating this form in various colours, angles and lengths, Sellbach, in her own words, ‘builds through painting’. Sellbach borrows the idea of seeing the same thing in multiple ways from philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s 1953 book Philosophical Investigations. According to Wittgenstein, each new viewing creates new meanings and associations that become swept up into the layered narrative of the work.
