About this work
Born in South Africa, Florence Fuller migrated to Melbourne as a child with her family. She enrolled in the National Gallery School in 1883 and trained with her uncle, the artist Robert Dowling, and by the late 1880s had established herself as a professional painter. In 1892 she visited South Africa before settling in Europe for a decade. Between 1895 and 1904, her work was exhibited at both the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy in London. In Fleury road in spring Fuller depicts a woman strolling down a narrow road in rural France. The work captures the arrival of the spring season, the trees along the path breaking into leaf and blossom under a cloudy sky.
