About this work

Herbert Bayer was a prodigal design student at the Bauhaus school, where he was appointed director of printing and advertising while still in his twenties. In 1928 he became art director of Vogue in Berlin. He migrated to the United States in 1938, where he remained until his death. There, he worked variously as a commercial artist, painter, sculptor and exhibition designer. In the 1960s Bayer worked with painting as a primary medium and became part of the Op Art movement, combining geometric and organic forms with vivid colour calibrations, of which Chromatic intersection (Warm reversed-warm, 12C) is a classic example.
