About this work

A jar of this type might have been used in a pharmacy, but the absence of any inscription denoting its intended contents means that it could just as easily have been for domestic storage. Surrounded by scrolling Gothic foliage, the front of the jar bears the coat of arms of the Medici family of Florence, while beneath each handle is the letter M. The arms suggest this jar was originally owned by a family who supported the Medicis’ rule.
