About this work

This jar bearing the arms of an unidentified Tuscan noble family (possibly the Aldobrandini di Lippi) is one of a group of six known to possess the same armorial. The ‘Persian palmette’ ornament that covers the body of the jar is derived from Islamic textile designs. ‘Savina’ refers to the shrub savin (Juniperus sabina). The shoots were used to prepare stimulants and could also be used as an abortive.
