About this work

The dessert, a distinct meal in the context of an eighteenth-century formal banquet, was the high point of celebratory dining and the focus of the theatrical spectacle that accompanied such events. Extravagant and costly foods were served, including confectionery and fresh fruit. Distinctive forms of tableware were created to serve these delicacies. Making up the dessert service was a set of dishes, plates, bowls and serving pieces quite separate from the dinner service.
