About this work
This extraordinary pharmacy jar is decorated with grotesque imagery of the highest quality. The infant Hercules is depicted on the spout, strangling the serpents who were sent to slay him in his cradle by the jealous goddess Hera. Below is the label ‘OXE ZACHAR’, and then two dogs fighting. The jar was made to hold oxysaccharum, a syrup prepared from vinegar and sugar.
