About this work
The story of Mucius Scaevola, from the histories of Livy, was well known in the Renaissance. When Lars Porsenna, King of the Etruscans, brought an army against Rome, Scaevola tried to assassinate him. When his attempt proved unsuccessful and he was captured, Scaevola held his hand out in a burning brazier to show his contempt for pain. Porsenna, impressed, allowed him to return alive to Rome. The coat of arms in the upper centre of this shallow bowl has not been identified. The arms on the right-hand side, those of the bride if these are marriage arms, may be for the Sacchetti family of Rome.
