About this work
The highly decorated rim of this bowl illustrates the complexity and fantasy of Renaissance grotesque ornament. Such imagery was inspired by ancient Roman wall decorations from sites such as the Domus Aurea (Golden House) of Nero in Rome that were rediscovered at the end of the fifteenth century. The grotesque motifs on this bowl, including a winged semi-human figure, birds, cornucopias, flowers, mock Islamic inscriptions and profile images of reclining deer are similar in style to those of the printmaker Nicoletta da Modena.
