About this work
The shape of this jar is derived from Islamic, perhaps Syrian, ceramic prototypes. It could serve equally well as a storage jar or as a flower vase. This style of ornamentation, traditionally named ‘Gothic foliage’, was popular in several maiolica production centres from the mid fifteenth century onwards.
