About this work
Colourful, Italian tin-glazed earthenware, known as maiolica, reached its apogee in the early sixteenth century with so-called istoriato (history-painted) wares. These vessels, inspired by Greek and Roman pottery and decorated with finely painted scenes from ancient history and mythology, were highly valued by connoisseurs and were intended for display as much for use. This example forms part of a service which was created for the great art patron Isabella d’Este; her arms combined with those of her husband Francesco Gonzaga adorn each piece.
