About this work

The careful and elaborate grotesque ornament on this jar, part of a group of early sixteenth-century Siennese albarellos, seems to owe something to Pinturicchio, one of the artists who, in Rome from the 1480s onwards, took special interest in the newly discovered wall paintings in ancient Roman buildings, such as Nero’s Golden House.
